Timothy Davies was born about 1838 in the town of Lampeter, Cardiganshire, Wales.[1] He was the second son of Charlotte Davies and Samuel Davies, who were drapers and ran a general store on High Street known as “Siop Sam.”[2] While Timothy was baptised at the Anglican church, he was probably raised as a Wesleyan Methodist. His parents were members of the Wesleyan Chapel in Lampeter and in 1874, his brother, Samuel, was in charge of collecting donations to renovate the chapel.[3]
By his early twenties, Timothy trained as a draper[4] and he was probably prepared to take over his parents’ business. He also had a hand in running the store as an assistant shopman.[5] Outside of his time at the shop, Timothy was known to enjoy ice skating during the wintertime. [6]
On December 9, 1871, Timothy died by suicide at the age of 33 years. Three days later, he was buried at the parish church of Llanwnen alongside many previous generations of his family.[7]
Timothy Davies isn’t a relative of mine, but he is a part of my Timothy First Name Study. He was also a first cousin of Susannah Lewis.
Supporting Youth
Suicide is a leading cause of death among teenagers. This booklet is a toolkit for talking to young people about suicide and can help you navigate the conversation as someone who may be in a position of authority relative to them.
